Tuesday 7^th November

The bombardment of Kimberley commenced early this morning, the shells dropping principally at Newton near Newton Home, Ruffels house, Reservoir, no damage was done.  Men, women & children running after them after they had dropped to pick up pieces as Curios, all people have left Kenilworth & the West End.   A many of the Kenilworth people are in camps at the school of mines.  Browns have taken a house down Transvaal Road.   Nothing particular occurred round Kimberley until Saturday Nov 11th when the Boers again commenced shelling the town from beyond the  Lazaretto, Schmidt's Drift Road.  One shell dropped on the road opposite Presbyterian Church another came through the roof of the Gresham Bar another dropped in front of the Catholic Church killing a kafir woman, this being all the damage that was done.  Several dropped in Kbly mine, the Reservoir & fighting was also going on between Kamfersdam & other Kafirs, one mounted policeman mortally wounded & one slightly wounded, fighting was continued all day.  Major May was out with a detachment of the D F Artillery, 2 guns & a Metford.
