Monday 23rd October
Today I joined William in sending a cable home to let you know that we were alright. It was addressed to Lucy so I hope she will let you know. I cannot say when she would receive it as it had to be sent by a despatch rider to Orange River, the only place where there is communication to Cape Town. The cable could only be sent by the sanction of the military authorities as we are entirely under military law.
